Selena Gomez Shares the Old Song She Hopes to Re-Record and Perform Again, offering fans a nostalgic glimpse into her early music days.
Before embarking on her solo career, the now 33-year-old singer and actress led the pop-rock band Selena Gomez & the Scene, releasing three studio albums between 2009 and 2012. Reflecting on those formative years, Gomez singled out one track that still holds a special place in her heart.
In a candid conversation on the Therapuss podcast with host Jake Shane (released Wednesday, Aug. 6), Gomez revealed that her favorite from the band era is Who Says — the uplifting lead single from their final album, When the Sun Goes Down. The empowering anthem reached No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 2011.
“It’s the most powerful moment when I get to perform it,” Gomez shared. “Honestly, that’s the only reason I’d ever do a tour again… just to perform Who Says.”
Although she hasn’t toured since 2016, Gomez admitted she would need to adjust the song’s key if she were to sing it today—lowering it “an octave for every year” since she first performed it. She’s also considering re-recording the song, feeling that her voice has matured beyond the original version.
“I need to redo it,” she said. “I should recut it.”
The Emilia Pérez actress also reflected on the emotional impact of the song’s message, recalling a moment abroad when she heard it on the radio and unexpectedly teared up.
“I thought, ‘Why am I crying to my own song?’” she laughed. “But it was the little me speaking those powerful messages that I still need to hear today.”
During the interview, the Rare Beauty founder also took a trip down memory lane, remembering how she first bonded with longtime friend Taylor Swift nearly two decades ago. Both had just gone through breakups with members of the Jonas Brothers, and their shared experience sparked a friendship that has lasted 16 years.
“She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other,” Gomez said. “We became best friends, stuck around for all the ups and downs, and here we are today.”
Recently, the Wizards of Waverly Place alum released a joint album with fiancé Benny Blanco, I Said I Love You First, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in May — proving that while Gomez cherishes her past, her present career is thriving more than ever.
